We have just returned from visiting Gus in New York. We also met up with the Price massive and proceeded to eat and drink our way through some of the big apples restaurants.
Here's the results
Best all round experience - Il Buco di Alimentari .... our first night and probably the best food and ambience, although Gus and I were unable to move properly after eating the absolutely massive (and delicious) short ribs.

Best view - Wythe hotel, Brooklyn .... Gus is living in Williamsburgh so the night we went to see his appartment we checked out the very recently opened and achingly hip Wythe Hotel. the view from the bar is absolutely spectacular and the restaurant, Reynards, is not bad either.

Best star spot - we saw the artist Chuck Close in Il Buco the sister restaurant to Il Buco di alimentari. we should have been at Locanda Verde but they let us down by getting the reservation wrong and then were rude and unhelpful. The starters were amazing (Quail with black figs was an absolute standout) but the main dishes were a bit of a let down and the sommelier was a bit of a jerk (didn't seem to want to reccommend any wines, which is frankly a bit weird as we thought that was his job) http://ilbuco.com/
Best comfort food - Freemans, a lovely relatively quiet sunday night dinner in this cozy spot that is probably best visited in winter when its warren of dark rooms would be perfect for keeping out the cold.

Best place on the high line - We had brunch at the standard Grill before walking the high line. The brunch was pretty good and it sits right underneath the high line.

Best place for escaping the summer heat - It was hot, very hot, particularly on the Saturday. Whilst the girls marched the streets, Peter and I escaped to the beautifully cool, calm interiors of Soho House. Make mine a mojito!

Best place for incredible ice cream - We had a sandwich in madison park from Eataly and returned for some of their ice cream (salted caramel and Nocciola for me) the store is fabulous, if a bit of a rip off but the ice cream was amazing.
